Published Feb 20, 2013Save a few backup vocals, Blackout Beach's 2011 album Fuck Death was tracked entirely by head honcho Carey Mercer. Following the recording sessions, he brought the songs to life onstage with a full band, and those versions have now been preserved on a new online LP titled Blues Trip.
A lengthy set of notes on Blackout Beach's Bandcamp page explains that the Fuck Death's re-envisioning was tracked last August at bassist/keyboardist and former Hot Hot Heat/Wolf Parade member Dante Decaro's barn-set home studio on Vancouver Island.
The biggest difference is that the song cycle now thrive on Melanie Campbell's crashing live drums, with tracks like "Deserter's Song" coming off much more raucous than their airy, electro-acoustic predecessors. Likewise, warm whammy-bar bends and maraca shakes now surge throughout "Beautiful Burning Desire." Blues Trip also features a smattering of guest vocals from Destroyer's Dan Bejar.
Technically, it's not a full album redo, as it lacks an alternate version of "Drowning Pigs," but the crew do offer up a new, swooning take of previously produced track "Cloud of Evil," off of 2009's Skin of Evil. You can sample it all down below and buy the album over on Bandcamp.
