Published Aug 09, 2018Pearl Jam kicked off a pair of shows at Seattle's Safeco Field last night (August 8), and they brought out more than a few surprises. Among them was a cover of the White Stripes' "We're Going to Be Friends," which you can now hear via some fan-captured footage.
"We're just talking about what songs we're gonna play," PJ frontman Eddie Vedder told the sold-out crowd. "I feel like a waiter with too many tables — I want to make sure everyone's happy." He then dedicated the song to "my friend Jack" before playing the White Stripes' classic.
For the cover, Vedder took on the track solo, stripping down to just him on his lonesome and an acoustic guitar. A few joyous backup dancers did join him, though.
Down below, you can watch the touching White Stripes cover for yourself. Following an onstage speech from Vedder, the song starts up a bit after the 5:00 mark.
Besides the White Stripes cover, Pearl Jam also covered Brandi Carlile's "Again Today" during the show, complete with an appearance from Carlile herself. You can also watch that performance below, as well as some other fan-captured concert highlights.
Pearl Jam will play another show at Safeco Field on Friday (August 10). You can see their complete touring schedule here.
