Published Nov 26, 2018Shawn Mendes has been growing up in the public eye since he was a 16-year-old Vine star, encapsulating a clean-cut, mom-friendly pop star image. Now 20 years old, he is no longer hiding his affinity for a certain recently legalized-in-Canada substance.
"I love weed," Mendes told Rolling Stone in a new cover story, though he isn't ready to brag about it on social media.
"I wouldn't tweet that — not yet, at least — but it's really good for me," he explained. "When I'm home, I'll smoke and then play guitar for seven hours."
Home for Mendes is Toronto, and he's over the age of 19, so it is legal for him here in Canada.
He even detailed his 20th birthday celebration, which was essentially a coffee shop crawl through Amsterdam with some of his buddies.
Mendes isn't totally abandoning his angelic reputation, though. Speaking about his time opening for Taylor Swift on her "1989 World Tour," he clarified that when he joined in the post-show group flip cup games, he was only playing with water.
Elsewhere in the interview, Mendes also addressed the long-running rumours that he's gay. Mendes denied the rumours, but admitted that he sometimes feels like he needs to be seen with a girl publicly to dispel them, despite knowing that being gay isn't "a bad thing."
Mendes also reflected on some of the speculative YouTube comments he read last year about his sexuality.
"I thought, 'You fucking guys are so lucky I'm not actually gay and terrified of coming out,'" he said. "That's something that kills people. That's how sensitive it is. Do you like the songs? Do you like me? Who cares if I'm gay?"
