Published Jan 28, 2014Having signed with True North Records last year, bluesy East Coast resident Matt Andersen is ready to release his first album for his new label home. Weightless is out on February 4, and it's available to stream in Canada on Exclaim.ca.
The 12-song album features several notable contributors, such as Joel Plaskett; his input includes co-writing the dub-tinged opener "I Lost My Way."
Andersen explained in a statement, "Writing with Joel Plaskett, he's always thinking about the hook and has a real melodic quality. I like having different angles on there. Dave Gunning is a really great storyteller, so the songs I wrote with him have more of a storytelling kind of vibe. A lot of the tunes I wrote with Keith Mullins were more a different groove than I'm used to; he's a drummer who played with me a lot, so he brought a different sense of rhythm and phrasing. Writing with Tom Wilson was trying to play catch-up, because he just keeps writing and writing."
Guitarist Paul Rigby (of Neko Case's band) also appears. The album was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos. While Andersen's live shows feature plenty of extended guitar solos, the album keeps things concise, mostly focusing on songs rather instrumental jams.
