Published Feb 20, 2013Rebecca Foon is a member of Esmerine and formerly played with Thee Silver Mr. Zion and Set Fire to Flames, but now the cellist has launched a new project called Saltland. The Montreal-based act's debut album is called I Thought It Was Us but It Was All of Us, and it's due out May 14 through Constellation.
The project is based around Foon's vocals and layered cello, with accompaniment provided by Jamie Thompson (Island, the Unicorns) on percussion and programming.
The collection was recorded in close collaboration with Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, Colin Stetson) at Foon's apartment studio, Six Saint V. Guest contributors include Canadian sax master Colin Stetson, Sarah Neufeld and Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire, Laurel Sprengelmeyer (aka Little Scream), Mishka Stein (Patrick Watson), and more.
According to a press release, "Saltland stakes out an unaffected, meditative, clear-eyed and earnest space where minimalism, dream-pop, drone, shoegaze, confessional folk, chamber music, and ambient/electronic coexist and coalesce." Scroll past the tracklist to hear the ethereal album cut "ICA."
The album is available to pre-order here.
