Published Aug 05, 2020Beloved '90s cartoon The Ren & Stimpy Show is set to join Beavis and Butt-Head as the latest intellectual property to be rebooted by Comedy Central.
The network is currently working on an undisclosed number of new episodes of the show, which was initially launched on Nickelodeon in 1991.
"I want to thank our partners at Nick Animation as we re-imagine these iconic characters with a new creative team," said Nina L. Diaz, president of content and chief creative officer for ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group.
"We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio," added Chris McCarthy, president of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group. "Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations."
Nowhere in the press release is any mention of the show's creator and original voice actor John Kricfalusi, and for good reason. In 2018, BuzzFeed published a lengthy exposé that alleged he had groomed underage girls and committed sexual assault.
In an apology, John K. admitted to having a 16-year-old girlfriend while working on the show at the age of 39. He blamed his actions on mental health issues and "poor impulse control."
