Gaur was unable to come up with the correct response, and instead wrote down: "We love you Alex!" (with a heart standing in for "love").
Trebek was clearly moved by the gesture, choking up when he said, "That's very kind of you, thank you."
The episode — part of the "Tournament of Champions" — was filmed just after Trebek announced that he would be undergoing another round of chemotherapy to combat pancreatic cancer.
Sorry for west coast spoilers, but I'm really glad I got the opportunity to say to Alex what everybody at the tournament was thinking ... 1/n— Dhruv Gaur (@dhruvg_) November 12, 2019
...for context, Alex had just shared with us that he was reentering treatment for pancreatic cancer. We were all hurting for him so badly. 2/n— Dhruv Gaur (@dhruvg_) November 12, 2019
When Final Jeopardy came up, I could've tried to puzzle it together, but really, just kept thinking about Alex, and thought he should know. 3/n— Dhruv Gaur (@dhruvg_) November 12, 2019
I'm just very grateful I got the opportunity to say what I know everyone was thinking. Sending all the love. #weloveyoualex— Dhruv Gaur (@dhruvg_) November 12, 2019
Trebek initially revealed his diagnosis back in March, then claimed to be "near remission" in May. He announced that he would be receiving additional treatments in September.
November 21 marks World Pancreatic Cancer Day, and throughout the tournament, contestants on Jeopardy! have been wearing purple ribbons to raise awareness.
The players from the "Tournament of Champions" have also organized a charitable play-along to raise awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer. It takes place on November 14 and 15, and encourages viewers to play along and donate $1 for every correct answer they get during the shows.
