In fact, Blair Witch brought in a meagre $9.6 million at the American box office. According to Variety, that's less than half of what it was expected to generate in its opening weekend. What's worse, despite a handful of critics singing its praises, the film currently sits at 36 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Proving that he's got a sense of humour about the whole thing, Barrett utilized some extremely dry, self-effacing wit with one perfect tweet:
Well, our horror film may have been a disappointment at the box office this weekend, but at least we got overwhelmingly negative reviews.— Simon Barrett (@Simon_Barrett) September 18, 2016
Adding to the hilarity, Wingard hopped on the thread to take a shot at box office champ Sully, to which Barrett added his own banter:
@Simon_Barrett bro I told you we shoulda made that movie about the boring guy who landed a plane in water instead.— Adam Wingard (@AdamWingard) September 18, 2016
@AdamWingard my pitch that it should be a tragedy from the perspective of the geese probably wasn't too commercial in retrospect, either— Simon Barrett (@Simon_Barrett) September 18, 2016
For what it's worth, Exclaim! is not alone in endorsing Blair Witch from a Canadian perspective. Jay Baruchel also loved it:
@Simon_Barrett I think you guys made a hell of a fucking flick. History will be kind to your movie.— Jay Baruchel (@BaruchelNDG) September 18, 2016
